Widely circulated footage appeared to show Jones making an obscene gesture toward opposing supporters, though he insists he was actually giving a thumbs-up to Dallas supporters in attendance as his team clinched a decisive win.
“It was regrettable. It was kind of an exchange with Cowboys supporters seated near me,” Jones stated during a Tuesday interview. “Present was a large group of Dallas supporters—not Jets fans, our fans. The whole venue was filled with enthusiasm for the Cowboys.”
He further clarified that the signal was entirely unintentional, happening amid the elation following the team’s last score. “I just put up the incorrect finger,” he noted. “The action was accidentally done. I’m not kidding. Should you call it accidental, you can. But it got corrected pretty quick.”
League Precedent for Owner Penalties
This is not the first time an NFL owner has been penalized for misconduct. Recent examples involve:
- Carolina Panthers owner David Tepper was penalized $300K for tossing a beverage at spectators in January 2024.
- Then Titans proprietor Adams received a $250,000 fine in 2009 for a comparable offensive signal.
